Opportunities in the world of STEM Support – North of England

Opportunities for part-time / freelance consultants in a highly respected established work / research experience scheme for Post 16 students in STEM and Social Sciences. The scheme operates throughout the UK and additional support is now needed in some areas of the North of England. The scheme offers 4-6 week placements to able Year 12 students wishing to study/work in STEM and Social Sciences.

We need to cover these areas:

  • Preston / Blackpool / Lancaster area,
  • North East Lancashire,
  • West Yorkshire,
  • Sheffield / Rotherham.

This opportunity would involve offering additional support to the Regional Placement Coordinators in sourcing new placements and promoting the scheme to the STEM and Social Sciences research community.

We recruit some 75% of placements via contacts in academia but there is scope to develop more placements in the private sector. This is a paid income opportunity for early career STEM qualified individuals (or not so young scientists and engineers who are still young at heart!). Gain real experience for their next career step into the exciting world of promoting lifetime careers.

The successful applicants must have:

  • Experience of STEM research in the public and /or private sector
  • Social Sciences (quantitative) degree
  • Personal communication and networking skills
  • An interest in science communication/public engagement
  • The ability to travel around and/or to the target areas

Key responsibilities:

  • Identify and recruit project supervisors and suitable projects that meet set criteria
  • Provide support to project supervisors in developing suitable projects
  • Support the Coordinators in matching students to projects, advising Project Supervisors on selection of suitable students

The role will offer experience in:

  • Public engagement in the field of education
  • Recruiting and supporting STEM researchers involved in public engagement
  • Considering issues and approaches in STEM education.

These part-time opportunities are available during the period January – April 2017.

There is also some part-time office based administrative work.
